Embracing Summer

Embracing Summer

Ahh Summer. Long, lazy days. A feeling of lightness, freedom and adventure. What magic does the Yang season of Summer offer us?

Summer Solstice: 22 Dec

For many of us, Summer is our favourite season. Long, lazy days filled with sunshine, swimming, ice cream and that feeling of freedom. Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere is always the week before Christmas which for many is a busy time. However the longer days, sunset swims and social attitude that Summer brings more than makes up for this.

Summer is a yang season; we fit more into our day with the longer sun light filled hours. Yang qualities are all about energy, joy, sunshine and ‘doing’. There’s a reason so many songs and books are written with a summer theme; often it’s associated with holidays and possibility, exploration and relaxation. Most festivals are in summer (not only for the good weather but the good vibes that this season brings.)

We peel off our layers of winter clothing and embrace the feeling of summer skin, floaty dresses and sensuality of baring our skin.

Summer is associated with freedom and expansion.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view the key element is fire which symbolises joy, vitality, energy and expansion. The two key organs that symbolise Summer are the Heart and Small Intestine.

The Heart needs nurturing to provide optimal health so doing things that bring you joy in Summer is part of your self care. The Heart organ regulates the blood and connects us to our mind and emotions. The Small intestine organ seperates the pure and impure foods and drinks aiding digestion and helps with emotional clarity. Together they help balance the fire element within the body.

7 Tips to Embrace Summer

1. Eat cooling foods; Given it’s the season of fire we need to cool down this heat with water rich foods like cucumber, watermelon and mint.

2.  Hydrating drinks are a must: Replenish the water lost from sweat with water, iced teas and alkalising drinks like chlorophyll.

3. Greet the sunrise: Summer mornings are a great time to do energetic exercise before the heat kicks in and it stimulates your body so you maintain energy throughout the day.

4. Avoid Inflammatory foods: Decrease spicy, greasy and fried, hot foods as these foods will make you hotter and you’ll suffer from overheating.

5. Seek shade at lunchtime: Heat rashes are common so to avoid excessive heat, seek shade in the heat of the day.

6. Embrace the sunset picnic: Catch up with friends for a picnic dinner at the park or beach. Being social is what the season calls for and it will keep your heart organ happy.

7. Balance Activity vs Rest: Use your energy in the mornings and evenings and rest in the hottest part of the day. Your body will thank you for it. Siesta anyone?

Ritual: Celebrate Summer Solstice with a party in your backyard or park. String some fairy lights, everyone brings a dish and you celebrate the harvest of summer and celebrate together.
